it actually feels like spring today...

Yesterday evening I planted one wide row of potatoes, some of the Russets.  I put fertilizer, lay out the seed potatoes, then cover with a little soil and compost mix and then cover that all with straw.  I will mound up more straw as the potatoes grow later.  This morning I was coughing a lot, so unfortunately I did overdo yesterday and probably won't feel up to planting more of the potatoes for a couple days.  But at least I got the one row in and the other rows have fewer weeds to pull out first so they will go faster too.  So good thing I have learned to be quite happy with getting projects done one little piece at a time, instead of always wanting to do the whole thing in one day as I used to be.

Today is the first really nice sunny and almost warm day we have had this spring, so it would have been a shame not to do something in the garden.  Just a totally beautiful day!  So this afternoon I planted one of the 2'x4' raised beds in the front yard with cylindrical beet seeds.  When I was out there I noticed that the corn flowers that reseeded from last year have started blooming.  One of them had been bent to the ground by the rain so I picked it, and you can see it at the top of this post.  It's in a very small old bottle, but the angle of the picture makes it look like a giant flower. :)

I also harvested my rhubarb, 3/4 lb of it.  My plants are still getting established, so that is my entire harvest for right now.  I made "Rhubarb Sweetie" from an old Rodale cookbook this afternoon to go with some tea.  The batter is sweetened with honey, which makes it turn such a nice golden brown.
