I usually turn off the heat (I heat my house with a natural gas stove) the first of May and don't turn it back on until October. I remember that last fall it was a real stretch waiting until October rolled around. I can't quite recall if I made it or not, but I sure was trying and it was getting so cold so early. So now it is May again and I would like to turn off the heat as usual, but I am not sure if I am quite ready to. It's been such a cold and damp spring. But it's my idea that I live in a temperate climate and should not need heat so much of the year, so I think I will be brave and turn it down so that it's just the pilot light burning. :)
The shallots I planted previously are growing well and are several inches tall. I have a few leeks that overwintered and are finally getting bigger though not yet big enough to pick and eat. Some of the strawberries have started blooming. I'm a little surprised the asparagus isn't popping up yet, but I guess with all these cool nights still it has decided to stay below ground a little bit longer.

I can't believe it's May here, either. So cold this morning. Had to turn the heat on and adjust the temperature upward three times. Might as well stay warm - no matter what zone we're in. Cold is so depressing. Liz
So far it is ok. The house was 59* when I woke up this morning, but I have a down comforter so it didn't bother me. I usually work from home 1 or 2 days a week though, so we'll see if I make it through the day without turning the heat up or not. :)
